This is my nephew Luke. He was born with a serious medical condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Basically it means he was born without the left ventricle of his heart. The left ventricle is the part of the heart that pumps blood to the rest of the body and without it you can not live. Because of this Luke was life flighted to Salt Lake's Primary Children's Hospital, and at only one week of age he had to have major heart surgery. It was the first of three that he will have to have in the next few years.
Ryan, my husband, and I had the opportunity to visit them in the hospital a few times. The night before his surgery I brought our camera and took a few pictures. This baby has gone through so much already but it's easy to see how much his parents love him. It was a very special experience to be able to be with them at such a difficult time.
Just an update - Luke's first surgery, which was in November of last year, went well. He had his second surgery about a month ago. He is still recovering from that and is currently still on oxygen, but is on the up swing.
